Section 1 - General

  1. C.V.A. tie breaking rules shall be used.
  2. The Commissioner, through the host schools shall be responsible for the appointment of tournament officials.
  3. Net heights:
    • Senior Boys 2.43 m
    • Junior Boys 2.35 m
    • Senior Girls 2.24 m
    • Junior Girls 2.15 m
  4. All playoff matches shall be best 2 of 3 games.

Section 2 - Junior Boys and Girls

    1. The OVSAA champion shall be decided by a tournament between the top two teams in each zone. Each team shall play a round robin tournament in Pool A or Pool B.
    2. Pools shall rotate as follows on a three-year cycle.

    3. The round robin with-in pools to determine pool seeding one through four.
    4. After round-robin play, #1 in each pool receives a bye while #4 is eliminated. #2 and #3 then cross over and play-off and #1 plays the winners of the semis.
    5. The 12 sub rule will be in place for league and playoffs.
  1. Valley Tournament Format
    1. Each team will play three pool play matches on Friday.
    2. The draw for the round robin play at the Valley Championship must be sent to the Valley Commissioner for approval before being sent to the participating teams
    3. Match times will be as follows, not starting earlier than 2:00 pm.

Section 3 - A, AA, AAA Girls

A)

  1. Teams must declare their A/AA/AAA/AAAA status by June 1st if their tier is not likely to change over the Summer; borderline teams must declare their status by the end of the 1st week of school in September to allow time for league schedules to be drawn up. (A = 1-80; AA = 81-160; AAA = 161-250; AAAA = 251+)
  2. League schedules can be drawn up in the way that suits the zone/tier the best. (i.e. 2 A zones may combine if number of schools is low; A and AA may choose to combine to facilitate a good schedule).
  3. Sr. ‘A’ Girls Provincials will be on the 13th week from the start of the season unless there are extenuating circumstances.

B)

  1. There will be 8 berths for the Okanagan Championships for each tier.
  2. A zone having three or less teams shall receive only one berth with the extra berth going to one of the larger zones. Number two in the smaller zone shall have the right to challenge #3 from the larger zone for the berth.
  3. If a zone has only one school registered in the league their berth will go to the zone that they join for league play.
  4. Singleton teams must declare at the start of the season which zone they plan to join for playoff purposes.
  5. A zone with no teams registered shall surrender their berth to the largest zone.
  6. Extra berth allotment would be determined each year.
  7. A zone playoff will determine the teams representing each zone at the Valley Championships.
  8. In Valley Championships there is rally point to 15 in the final game (and no cap).
  9. In “A” Girls the 12 sub rule will be adopted (as per CVA) the Okanagan Championships will be a 2-pool round robin, with matches to be the best of 5 in the Gold and Bronze matches.

After round robin play, the first place teams receive a bye and the fourth place teams are knocked out. The playoff format is as follows, with all matches the best 2 of 3:

Rules & Regulations: Volleyball

In cases where the winner of (5) has not lost to loser (6) and there are only two berths to the Provincials for the Okanagan there will be a backdoor challenge hosted by the loser of (6).

C) AAA tier

  1. All “AAA” tier teams, to a maximum of 8 teams, shall advance to the Valley Championships, to be held in the zone scheduled to host, as outlined in Section 5.
  2. The Okanagan championships will run the same as the A and AA tiers.

Section 4 – AAAA Girls

A)

  1. Teams must declare their A/AA/AAA/AAAA status by June 1st if their tier is not likely to change over the summer. Borderline teams must declare their status by the end of the 1st week of school in September.

  2. League schedules be equitable and fair in travel and play with single weighting of each league game.
  3. The AAAA Provincial Championships will occur in the 13th week of the season.

B)

  1. There will be up to 8 berths for the Okanagan Championships.
  2. The league shall abide by the rules of CVA as modified by BCSSGVA. The playoff draw shall be determined either through league standings or a seeding tournament.
  3. The rotation of host for the Okanagan Championships should be as follows:

  1. The winner of the Okanagan Championship will qualify for the AAAA Girls Provincial Championship.
  2. All playoff matches shall be best of five.Any school thaat is unableto fulfil their responsibilities in hosting these championships will lose their opportunity to host for one full year(currently every 6 years). The rotation should be adjusted by one position accordingly and all schools in line to host would bump up one year in the rotation(the next school in line will host that year).
  3. Any new team joining the league will be added to the championship host rotation following one full year of competition. These teams will be added to the rotation at the end of the current cycle in order to prevent the same zone from hosting in     consecutive years(currently 7 or more years from joining the league)
  4. Any school that drops out of the valley league will lose their opportunity to host the valley championship until they return to competition for one full year. The valley host rotation will be adjusted accordingly, with these teams removed on the first year the team drops out. These teams may re-enter the league as a “New Team” and will be added to the end of the current cycle in order to prevent the same zone from hosting in consecutive years.(currently 6 years from the year of joining)
  5. The discussion of the possibility of a valley league vs. a valley seeding tournament will take place at the valley AGM next year,along with the valley play-off structure.

C) The hosting school’s coach will stand as the commissioner in the respective year.

Section 5 - “A” Boys

Play-off Format:

After round robin play, the 1st place team from each pool receives a bye into the semi finals.

If there are five or fewer “A” boys volleyball teams in the Okanagan then a round robin will be played.
Section 6 - AA Boys

  1. At the beginning of each season, each zone will designate two coaches to act as rankers. The rankers will send their rankings of the Valley AA Boys Volleyball teams to the league commissioner every two weeks via email. The commissioner will update all participating schools with the rankings.
  2. After the Zone Championships, only the top team from each zone will be guaranteed a spot in the Valley Championship. Any teams ranked in the top six that do not win their zone will also be given an automatic berth. The final berths will be contested in a Wild Card Tournament by the four highest ranked teams that have not already secured a berth to the Championship.
  3. The wildcard tournament must take place by the Tuesday preceding the Valley Championship and should be hosted by the most centrally located team taking part in the wild card challenge or an alternate site determined by the commissioner. The wild card challenge will be a 4-team round robin tournament. After the round robin, the top 2 teams will qualify for the Valley Championship. Ties will be broken using CVA tie breaking procedures. The 2 teams that qualify for the Valley Championship will be seeded #7 and #8.
  4. The Round Robin format will be used on the Friday of the Valley Championship with rankings being used to determine the makeup of the pools as follows. Note that the draw for the Round Robin play at the Valley Championship must be sent to the Valley Commissioner for approval before being sent to the participating teams.

e) On Saturday, the playoffs will be as follows:

Quarter- finals are best of 3 and Semi-finals, 3rd place match, and Finals are best of 5

1st in pool A recieves a bye and plays the winner of 3rd in A vs 2nd in B

1st in pool B receives a bye and plays the winner of 3rd in B vs 2nd in A

It is proposed that the Saturday match times be as following:
1. Quarter Finals (best of 3) @ 10:00 am
2. Semi Finals (best of 5) @ 11:30 am
3. Lunch Break until 3:00 pm
4. 3rd Place Match (best of 5) @ 3:00 pm
5. Final (best of 5) @ 5:00 pm
It is important to give a break between the semi-finals and the 3rd place match so that teams are not playing back to back best of 5’s with no rest.

Section 7 – AAA Boys

  1. A “AAA” size school may not enter a team at a lower level Valley Championship.
  2. Teams wishing to register “AAA” must declare so by September 30th.
  3. In order to take part in the “AAA” valley Championships teams must be registered with the B.C.S.S.B.V.A.
  4. There will be a Valley wide ‘AAA’ Volleyball league
    • The Valleys will be a single knock out tournament.

6. “AA” schools may apply to play “AAA” league on the condition that they stay in the league for a minimum of 2 years.
